I've tried various ways to crush pills before including using a shot glass and a blunt metal utensil. That worked but was very slippery resulting in a coarse grind. The internal surface of this bowl, as well as the end of the pestle, has an unfinished texture which makes pill pulverizing so much easier and efficient.
