4.6 out of 5 stars 89 ratings

Turn your 10-12 standard meals into 50 new taste sensations by introducing new spices! No one cooks by spice, yet all the spice books are organized that way. This book gives details on 100 spices, but also lists all the main foods we eat. Under each food, such as corn, ham, rice, etc. is a list of spices that go with that food followed by recipes to cook using that main ingredient. All this is on the same page. It is practical, user-friendly and arranged according to how we really cook.

. . . Ms. Murdock combines an encyclopedic knowledge of herbs and spices with recipes, substitutions and a plain speaking voice. I have not seen this useful a cookbook in a long time and highly recommend it. --Catherine S. Vodrey, Convivium

About the Author

Linda Murdock, like most mere mortals, spends her time juggling between family and work, while trying to come up with new dinner ideas 365 times a year! She became interested in spices after finding that her husband's allergies made using pre-packaged foods impossible. Although there were plenty of books on spices, none were arranged the way she and many others cook. This is her answer to that missing link to other cookbooks.

Linda K. Murdock was raised in central Illinois. She fell in love with Denver on a business trip, hitched a trailer to her hatchback and headed West. Once in Denver she had a variety of jobs, including telemarketing, financial planning and working in the tax department of an international gold mining company. She spent her free time exploring Denver and the entire state of Colorado and hasn't stopped. Go to her lindakmurdock.com blog to read about her latest adventures and Colorado discoveries.

Her book, Almost Native, How to Pass as a Coloradan, combined her passion for history and Colorado and appeared in museums across the state in 2004. She recently launched a total rewrite of the book in 2016 as All Things Colorado in e-book format. Her focus with this new touring guide includes an invaluable list of things to do in every major tourist town in the state. Organized by location, each with its own list of local hikes, mountain biking trails, scenic drives, skiing, hot springs, brewpubs, wildlife viewing, etc., the e-book lets visitors pick and focus on their areas of interest without sorting through a lot of travel guides. You won't come home to find out other things you could have done had you known they existed at the same location.

Linda K. Murdock's most successful book to date is her best-seller, A Busy Cook's Guide to Spices. Her motivation was her husband, who was allergic to MSG and other preservatives. She found that most spice books were organized alphabetically, which does very little for everyday cooks. Her book is organized by the foods that we eat. Under each food (meat, veggie or starch) is a list of spices that go well with that food, along with recipes to get cooks thinking outside the box.

She later expanded her flavor-mania by creating A Busy Cook's Guide to Flavor-Packed Cookies and Bars, again because her husband was allergic to chocolate. She organized the book by flavor with a cookie and bar recipe for each flavor. Baking time had to be less than 35 minutes and quantities less than 36 cookies or 16 bars. Since her recipes emphasize flavor over sweetness, it seemed unnecessary to include color photos of cookies without frosting, that vary only in their shade of brown or golden. But don't let the lack of photos keep you from tasting these flavorful cookies.

Linda K. Murdock's fourth book revolves around another passion, reading. She loves mystery series and created a crossword puzzle book called Mystery Lover's Puzzle Book that was the number 3 paperback bestseller for the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association in December 2007. The book contains a synapsis of 29 different mystery series by popular authors, along with a crossword puzzle based on each series.

I haven't had much time to really use it yet. But it has very helpful features: flavor/taste of the different spices, how and when to use, what other flavorings to use with it, color and form, and other useful tips. There is a section on different foods and gives lists of seasonings to use with them, how to cook, and buying guides, along with preparation ideas. Every kitchen should have a spice guide. I bought this one for a wedding present. I also found other spice guides and bought them as presents. I haven't had time to figure out which is the most helpful. But they may be just helpful in different ways.

I do not know much about using herbs and this author wrote this book from trial and error, on how to use on everyday same old thing meals, to get something different. There is wonderful information on each herb, when to put it in the recipe, if it is left to long and is to spicy what to do. Towards the back, are some simple recipes to get you using the herbs.

I already tried one recipe, and it turned out perfect, which if anything could go wrong it would. What I liked about this recipe from other recipe books, if it says it is going to be done in a certain time, it is and it is perfect. All other cookbooks, give approximate time and maybe or maybe not it will be done.

It, also, gives you more confidence to experiment with recipes and herbs, which I lacked.

Did I, also, tell you I purchased 2 more of these books for gifts.

Most reference books on spices start with the spice and suggest ways to use it. In these books, I found that these types of books rarely tell you amounts of the spice or when to add it.
This book does just the opposite. It does start with some basic spices and has excellent tips of use. Example: anise - use 1/4 tsp. for 2 servings, use at the beginning of cooking. It also includes home interesting uses as remedies, its origin and folklore.
The second part of the book, I found most useful. It contains common meats, vegetables and grains and tells you what seasoning would go well with the dish. It also has simple recipes and preparation ideas.
My husband uses this reference when making our weekend scrambled eggs. While we love to use fresh basil, we can't get it from out garden during the winter. Thus we use this book for other herbs.
I checked a 4 star instead of a 5 because the recipes are overly simplistic unless you are a total beginner. However, even for a cook like me who has over 60 spices or spice mixes, this is a good reference to figure out which one to use when I am experimenting with taste and to broaden my knowledge. It is relatively inexpensive and the spiral binder makes it very easy to use - the pages fold all the way out.
Note - there are no pictures except on the front page.

It’s a very interesting book. I have friends tell me they use this or that spice. I asked what makes it taste sweet. She said its ginger. Don't remember seeing my Mom add ginger to anything, although it was in the spice rack. Now I can look up ways to use it. Adding sweetness without sugar is interesting to me as I consume too much processed sugar, and need to cut back.
So, if you have ever said "hum that is an interesting flavor, what is it?” this is a handy book to have in the kitchen. My Mom could cook and fix goofed recipes and she rarely measured anything. Wish I would have spent time in the kitchen with her watching and learning.

Excellent book! I keep ordering them for friends. I have always used herb and spices and feel this is the best of all my herb books. Perfect for a person who has always used herbs and for those just starting. Has info about each herb, how to use it, historical and medicinal uses. Then in the second half you can pull something out of the frig and then look up that item and find what herbs and spices can send your dinner over the top! Also ideas for your own blends! I have always worked in the food business, as a chef, caterer, my own bread business, and personal chef and this is the book to help all who read it.

I am a from scratch cook and am always trying new spices and combinations. This book is a fantastic source of new ideas, information about spices, what they work with, what is in some spice mixes like curry, five spice and other regional mixes.

I don't usually read cookbooks unless I am looking for something but I got started reading this book and couldn't put it down. It is such a great addition to any kitchen that I have given several of them as gifts to friends that enjoy cooking. What fun it is to have a helpful resource to be creative.

Linda did an excellant and informative job.

This is the perfect spice book to be added to any kitchen! Finally, I understand what spices can be used together and why they work in all of the foods I prepare. Wish this book was around 60 years ago when I was first learning how to cook!
