I've always had issues when it comes to making uniform-looking burgers. Hand-forming kind of gets the job done, but I always end up with patties that are too thick in the middle and end up "ballooning" in the middle as they cook, meaning that I then had to press them flat with a spatula, losing a lot of the juices in the process. As a result, I started looking for a burger press. It couldn't be very expensive, because there's not much point in spending a lot of money on something that doesn't work, and it had to be easy to clean. Fortunately for me, I made a great choice on both counts and went with the Progressive International HPM-1, which really is close to being the perfect burger press.

The HPM-1 basically comes in three pieces, the two press pieces, plus a smaller part that fits into the lower press and has a dimple in the center. This serves two purposes, the first being to make getting the burger out of the press much easier. The second, and more important part, is that the dimple basically depresses the center of the burger, actually making it thinner in the middle than at the edge. This makes cooking the burger through much less time consuming and makes the "ballooning" that I mentioned much, much less of an issue. Since you won't really have to press your burgers once they're on the grill (or at least, not nearly as much), you also end up having a juicier end product, so I guess that's a third purpose (and benefit).

If there is a negative to the press, I guess it would be that sometimes the ground meat (beef or port) does stick to it. Using a bit of cooking spray does alleviate this and it's really not as bad as some have written it to be. All-in-all, I can't imagine being able to find a better press for the price. If you're looking for something cheap that gets the job done and then some, the HPM-1 Perfect Burger Press is the way to go.

Works as intended, makes burgers flat and hold together better than hand-patting. I make a burger that tastes really good with worcestershire sauce, A1 steak sauce, and ground up Cheese-it crackers and it's really tasty but it doesn't hold together well half the time when hand-patted and put on a skillet. I got tired of them falling apart even after working hard making them right because it's almost enough to hold together. Looked around, found this, ordered it. It does the dimpling trick for you to keep burgers from balling up, the edges hold well while the flat patty cooks quicker and more evenly than most hand patted burgers do. The press I received is black instead of white like the picture. When I applied olive oil to the press it made the beef stick much worse and wouldn't peel off cleanly, as-is it works fine. With a little practice you will know how much ground meat to add to get the desired size patty. Hand-wash and it should last a lifetime. This is also good for homemade breakfast sausage, I use ground turkey with sage, red pepper, and brown sugar and that is really good stuff. I imagine there is even more possible uses.

Like every else has said, this is a great way to make burger patties that have a consistent shape, thickness and cooking time. The process goes very fast, too. My wife and I turned two lbs. of meat into patties in less than five minutes. Clean up is easy, too - you just toss it in the dishwasher afterward. My only issue with it is the patty thickness. The maker is 5/8" deep and by the time you smoosh the top down onto the meat and level it off, the patty comes out 1/2" thick, which is *FINE*, except ideally you'd be able to make patties that were 3/4" thick. That way (according to my Weber cookbook) on an outdoor grill you'd get a slight char, or crust on the outside before the inside of the patty had lost all of its pinkness, which is what happens if you cook a 1/2" patty to the point of charring on the outside.

Even so, the convenience, price, and features of this item make it a winner and if you absolutely have to have a few 3/4" burgers, it wouldn't be so hard to make a few by hand.

I love this burger press. My favorite thing about it is that it is dishwasher safe. Those typical metal presses gross me out because the do not seem as clean and easy to clean as this one. The press works great. I suggest getting wax paper to place on top and bottom of the burger meat when pressing. If you just put the meat on the plastic of the press after a couple of patties some meat sticks to the press making the next patty a little harder to remove. With wax paper there are no issues. My one complaint and i'm not sure if there is much you can do about this is that the top part of the press is a little too small and some meat squeezes out the top some times. I think they probably could have made it 1mm larger in diameter to prevent this. Other than that the press works great. Love being able to press about 12 patties in a matter of minutes and freeze them for later use.

Update: unfortunately last night this press bit the dust. Either I pushed too hard or it had a weak spot. Either way, part of the press with the handle split exactly in half. The handle is still together, its the plate part that split perfectly down the middle. I guess it isn't as strong as I had though. Something to be aware of when purchasing...

This is a great and inexpensive addition to my kitchen. It makes burgers up to about 1/2 pound. They are perfectly formed and easy to grill. The 'dimple' is a great inovation. It keeps the burgers from puffing up in the middle. The dimple insert also makes the burger easier to remove from the press. The whole thing is dishwasher safe.

The hamburger does stick to the press a little so I bought and recommend papers. I bought 1000 for about $11. I found that using them both on the top and bottom makes the whole process quick and easy. The burgers are ready to hit the grill and don't stick to the press or eachother.

Overall a great product for a great price.

Picked this up after going on a burger making frenzy after getting Jamie Oliver's 'Ministry of Food'.

It's all plastic, and at first was a bit of a surprise (it shouldn't be as it's clearly shown in the picture'. In use it has proven to be sturdy and well thought out. The little grippy section on the handle is particularly useful when working with oily hands.

Burgers are produced to a good stout size that's not too over the top, and is thick enough to be tasty / have texture, yet thin enough to cook relatively quickly without burning.

The wee dimpled lifter makes getting burgers out of it a snap.

If you're making burgers, even infrequently, this is a good buy as you make nice uniform patties that survive being chucked on a grill.
