I had a recipe I was making the other day that called for corriandar, all I had were corriandar seeds. I tried EVERYTHING to grind these things up!! My food prossecors were BOTH too big (even my one cup processor)! I even pulled out the hammer to try and pulverize them! All I ended up doing was mangling a plastic bag and making a mess!I hopped on amazon, VERY upset and determined to not have that problem again! So scrolling I went and so the cute mortar and thought 'aww...it's cute an all, but do I REALLY feel like hand grinding??" I recalled watching a cooking show and the chef swore by GRINDING herbs because it releases so much better. The mortar wasn't much so I ordered and got it today!I dumped a few corriandar seeds into the mortal and ground with the pestle and this LOVELY fragrance hit me! It was absolute HEAVEN!! I'm thrilled with it!! So handy too! I don't have to haul out huge electric applances. Just get my mortar and pestle and away I grind for fresh spices! A wonderful purchase!
It's a mortar and pestle, or a bowl with a tiny club in it, and after (at least) 3500 years of steady use (the oldest medical writing we have from Ancient Egypt mentions them), it's still a very effective way to pulverize smallish items into even smaller items, or into paste.
This particular mortar and pestle is small (about the size of two fists placed together, which is supposedly also the approximate size of the human brain), which is perfect for grinding healthy chia seeds, mustard seeds, and other already small seeds for cooking or mixing with breakfasts. After several months of fairly regular use, this one shows no scratches or other signs of wear, looking basically like it did when we purchased it, and the pestle (the club) has not worn down at all as far as I can tell.
If you want a small, durable grinder, this is a good one to choose, and may well be around the general area of my home 3500 years from now.
Bought this a few years back. Looks pretty and does a decent job of crushing up small amounts of spices at a time. Usually a tablespoon or more gets a bit unwieldy. I often use it for cumin, but also works all right with peppercorns and kosher salt (which I wanted to bring down to a finer grain to sprinkle on popcorn).
The red marble looks great and seems to be excellent quality, but the size was much smaller than I expected.
Dimensions: Pestle - approximately 4" long - 1/4" wide at the top of handle - 1" wide at the grinding base Mortar - inside cup grinding area - approximately 1 1/2" deep - 1 1/2" wide inside bottom - 2 1/4" wide inside top
The pestle is too short for my hand and I have an average size female hand. I find myself pushing the pestle with the center palm of my hand and it hurts my palm. If I wrap my hand around the pestle, then my fingers hit the insides of the mortar.
The mortar is smaller than I expected and the spices shoot and spill over the sides. Depending on the spice, I can only grind about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of spice at a time. I have to keep one hand over the mortar (while grinding) to keep the contents inside.
It grinds my spices with ease, but it is just too small for me. I would give this 5 stars if the pestle and mortar were larger.

LOVE this. Fits nicely into my hand, is a gorgeous color, and works perfectly. I love beautiful tools to do everyday tasks, and this is just that. Looks beautiful sitting on a small shelf I have in the kitchen. Arrived exactly as described and I'm very happy with the order and seller.
The red marble is very pretty; natural stone looks good on my granite counter-top and its small size (2.5" diameter and about 1.5" deep) fits well in a corner. Works like a charm for grinding pepper corns, kosher salt, herbs and seeds but only in small batches.
I purchased this Mortar and Pestle about a week ago and have no regets. The price is right and this is a very nice peice. I have used it only a couple of times to grind my dogs medicine but it has worked great for that. Mostly I purchased this just because I enjoy the look of it. It is worth the price very heavy duty and crafted extremely well. If there is a complaint to be had it is that the bowl is very shallow.
