If you are looking for a molcajete, look no further. This granite molcajete is AWESOME. I purchased a lava rock molcajete from Williams-Sonoma and spent days, weeks, etc. seasoning it...trying to get rid of the grit. Both the mortar and pestle were SO pitted there was NO way it would ever be grit-free and I finally realized this so out in the trash it went. This molcajete is granite which means there are NO pits and it requires VERY little seasoning. I ground some rock salt in it and have used it twice now to make salsa and...NO GRIT! Best of all, this things is even larger than it looks - PLENTY of room to make guacamole, salsa, etc., etc. I can't recommend this enough!

Excellent shallow mortar, and only slightly radioactive
I already had an excellent mortar and pestle, but higher and deeper in design, so when I saw this as an unadvertised special going for chump-change, I hoisted it with both hands and lowered it carefully into my shopping cart. The shape is perfect for guacamole, but don't forget to first condition the mortar/pestle by making and then throwing away rice flour before you make anything else. Why is that important? To grind off most of the granite dust that's going to grind off. After an hour of grinding (painlessly done while watching the Masters Tournament), my tablespoon of rice had the consistency and colour of a just-opened bag of cement (I'll try to post a photo). Granite is only slightly radioactive, but ingesting it is NOT recommended. Don't forget to condition both ends of the (excellent) pestle, as both are useful. One star off because the interior is not perfect. There's a 2-3" flat spot at the bottom with a small indentation in the centre from the boss on the grinding tool. These are minor grievances, though, and the indentation is even handy for very small amounts of (say) cumin. I recently realized that I ALSO need a tall, deep wooden mortar, for making Northern Thai papaya salads (a la Andy Ricker's Pok-Pok), but I hope three will then be enough.
