The "heaviness" of the item is something I both like and dislike. It is heavy enough to where I feel it would be difficult to break it by accident. It, however, is also heavy enough that you wouldn't want to put it on a high shelf to find. This is something that should sit out on the counter top or be at a level that is easy to grab. Don't mistake my point by thinking it is like a block of lead in weight, it most certainly is not. It can be moved around relatively easily for me, however, I am considering the grandmothers out there that may not want something that is this heavy.
The mortar was well designed and arrived with no chipping. The feel is solid and the look is a dark stylish one. It definitely goes well with dark wood cabinets & silver appliances (if that is a concern). The pestle, likewise, was in good condition as well when it arrived as there was no chipping or anything.
Based on my initial use and observations I rate this item as high quality. I will update my review if over the next couple of months something causes me to change my original opinion, but for now this is where I stand.

Black and Solid
Absolutely beautiful set. I was surprised at how dark it is, the manufacturers picture looks like a poorly lit picture of the light gray mortar and pestle, but it really is black as night(see uploaded picture). The marble is heavy and well made, this set is at least journeyman level. I'm so excited to finally be able to make my water walking potion...now I just need to find Tiger Lily Nectar and stinkhorn cap to go with the grapes I bought at the store.

Beautiful but quite slippery

- The marble finishing is beautiful, but can be slippery. However, there are ridges at the bottom to prevent it from sliding during grinding.
- The pestle handle is also quite slippery and the rounded end is smoother than I wanted. It might make grinding harder for me.
Overall I would give 3.5, but Amazon doesn't have such rating.
I would try it soon and would update my review later.
