It has a light so that upon pressing the button to activate, the light comes on to illuminate the food (good idea in dimly lit conditions) as you apply the pepper. UPDATE: I purchased this electric pepper grinder from Amazon in the spring of 2014, a year ago as I write this update. After several weeks of use, I wrote the following Amazon review, giving 5 stars: `'This electric pepper grinder (4 AA batteries) works beautifully and is an elegant design for your table. It has a light so that upon pressing the button to activate, the light comes on to illuminate the food (good idea in dimly lit conditions) as you apply the pepper. We are very pleased with this purchase.'' After several months of use, a peppercorn became lodged in the grinding mechanism, and I tried to pry it out with a toothpick, but without success. So I disassembled the grinding mechanism and took the offending peppercorn out. But to my chagrin I couldn't remember how the pieces fit together and after several abortive attempts, decided to request the re-assembly instructions from the manufacturer. I did so through Amazon. The next thing that happened: The manufacturer, Epare, sent me a brand-new pepper grinder, same model. Now, keep in mind the problem was MY fault, and I had NOT requested a replacement - only instructions for putting my grinder back together. Over several decades, my wife and I have had occasional problems with merchandise of one kind or another, and stores and manufacturers have responded with varying degrees of customer support, from poor to excellent. However, this was a first - no questions asked product replacement without our even asking for it. Needless to say, we were extremely pleased. And we still LOVE our Epare pepper grinder!

Good motor, but sticker!
Bought a cheaper one that broke soon; the motors on this brand/model are much more solid and smooth which is nice, and so also works quickly. But... why do they put stickers on the outside that won't come off??? Kind of ridiculous. You'll want to get some sticker remover or plan time to futz with it...

However, I would not say it is practical or usable for anyone who isn't too fond of an intelligence test.
I give it a gadget score of 6 - looks neat but not easy to use
Functionality - I give it a 3 - I tried to grind for ages then a lot came out at once
Its instructions didn't exactly help me know how to get this right.
Overall I would class this as a Christmas present for a highly logical person who likes intelligence tests.
For Joe and Jane Public, it isn't hitting the mark at all. With all its issues for me , not being so hot on techno-wizardry, it's a 3 on the scale. Apparently there are more user friendly battery operated pepper mills out there.
Just a follow on, this now works on the second days try - I put four of the same Duracell batteries in and added more salt to the mill. Perhaps if the batteries all need to be of the same make as well as strength, this should be noted on it? Works okay now.
