- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2024I love the depth and details from planning, to planting to harvesting to propagation. Great recipes, medicinal uses, photos. What a great value for cost.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2008This is a simply marvelous book. It is a mystery to me why it is not continuously in print. Do not hesitate to buy this used from Amazon Marketplace sellers, as I did.
The book is large and beautifully fashioned and produced, with gorgeous full-color photographs not only of each herb, but of dozens of different species of each herb, and of every possible use to which herbs can be put. There are full-color pictures of crafts, teas, household items, massage how-to illustrations, dyes--to say nothing of prepared food dishes; this is actually a cookbook within an herbal!
ONE CAVEAT: if you are looking for an in-depth gardening how-to, with exhaustive planting info, you might want a supplement for this book, which sticks to the basics. But every other herb-related topic is embellished and elaborated on. There are dozens of pages with full-color, labeled illustrations of different "theme" gardens you can plan. Whole chapters EACH on potpurri, herbal cosmetics, dyes, medicines, and household cleaners. Fabulous, unique homemade gift items like herbal-scented beads--that's right, painted beads made entirely out of herbs and plants!
The food/cooking section alone is worth the price of the book. The dishes are fantastic. I have already made the Sweet Rosemary Slices and several teas and drinks, and they are wonderful. Almost every recipe has a full-color photo.
I could go on and on, but rather than waste your time, I will leave you to hit "Add To Shopping Cart."
Money has rarely been this well-spent.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2016Bought this book used. It was in great shape. I don't remember seller mentioning that there was writing in the book although I found this to be a nice surprise. There isn't much and it's not blocking anything. I found it charming. The book itself has some nice designs for herb gardens. There are beautiful live pictures of the plants including the roots, seeds flowers and leaves. Some have pictures of the seeds and leaves when dried. Each plant has a little history and description. Book gives lifespan (example Hardy Shrub), and height. It also sections on Cultivation; propagating, growing, harvesting, and preserving, Uses; Culinary, Cosmetic, Aromatic, and Medicinal. The book is a bit larger than I expected so it's not one you could carry easily as it's about 14 inches by 8 inches. These are guestimates. :) I am very happy with the book and look forward to using it for many years.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2008This is an excellent book, but there are a couple of drawbacks. First, and most annoying, is the ordering of the herbs by scientific name. Makes it hard to find the herb you're looking for. Second, it's a large book, takes up a lot of space on the table and doesn't fit on all shelves.
It has served me well enough, but I recently came across Your Backyard Herb Garden: A Gardener's Guide to Growing Over 50 Herbs Plus How to Use Them in Cooking, Crafts, Companion Planting and More and I have to say this is the book I would pick up instead, in retrospect. I may even buy it anyway. It's small, has all the reference information in this one (and then some), and more readily available.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2016This is a really great book about herbs. About half of the book is an "herb index" with colored pictures and detailed information about various herbs. This book focuses a lot on how to use herbs in everyday life. There are tons of recipes, some for more common uses, like herbal soups and breads. But there is a lot of information on less-common ways of utilizing herbs, like making herbal dyes, paper, potpourri, facial creams, and essential oils. I haven't tried all of the recipes, so I cannot say for certain that they are all fabulous, but there is definitely plenty of information.
This book has a 1988 copyright, and it does give off a little bit of an 80's vibe, but herbs haven't changed much in the last few decades, and the majority of the information is still useful. While this book doesn't devote a great deal of time to actually growing herbs, it's a good book for learning how to actually use them.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2024This is comprehensive and very interesting. It has all the info I was looking for in one book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2014There are so many Herb books out their; if you could only get one this is it! I had seen this book at my Doctors office; in just the 10 minutes I was in the waiting room; I knew I had to have a copy! In this book there is anything from indoor/window/outdoor/patio/balcony herb gardens, Herbs in the Kitchen (With recipes included), Herbs for: dyes, toys, and potpourri. Herb for Beauty: skin care, skin cream/lotion recipes, herbal baths, soaps, hand, hair, eye, teeth care. Herbs for health: preparations, A-Z herb treatments. Cultivating & Harvesting: soil prep, propagation, maintaining plant shape. Growing herbs: in Container/ indoors. How to keeping herb plants healthy, Harvesting, and store/preserving them. (and much more!)
Note: I have seen this book with a different cover picture; but everything is the same inside the book. I was able to get a hardcover copy in Good condition for under $7 (free shipping) so look around for the deals (for some reason the paper back copy was listed as $8 bucks more; strange right?) you won't be disappointed in this book!!! If I could give is 6 stars I would have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book for Herbs
Very informative on all aspects of herbs and spices. Unlike many other books it doesn’t only contain exotic herbs, it contains herbs that are used by the average person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eines der besten Kräuterbücher

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate herb guide
One of my favourite reference books. My mother had a copy and called it her witch book. I bought a copy for myself a few years ago and this one was for a friend.
So many herbs, each one has identifying pictures of leaves, stems flowers and seeds also with a growing, Havering, propogation advice, history, medicinal and culinary uses. The back section of the book has crafts, aromatherapy, natural skin care and recipes all to make from herbs.
