I am using this mini mortal & pestle for crushing and grinding medications (pills) to a fine powder for use in my GJ feeding tube. This is not only a gorgeous piece worthy of sitting out on any counter top, but it also does the job 100x better than any "pill crushers" on the market. I have a Silent Knight crusher as well (considered to be amongst the "gold standard" of pill crushers)... and it takes 2x longer to get a fine powder than it does using this classic & old fashioned method. The Pestle is heavy enough that it requires *very little hand pressure* to grind even the toughest of pills. Again, the Silent Knight crusher is much harder on my hands. The twist/turn style crushers are even worse. It seems so simple, but this truly is the best way in my opinion to achieve a fine powder for pills, spices, nuts, etc.
I agree it's small ..but I wanted that, and feel the size is actually perfect for my needs. If you've ever been in a Japanese restaurant and ordered tea, the little cups they serve it in are comparable to the size of this mortar (this might be a little smaller but not much). I actually plan to buy a second one just for spices only. (I might not be able to eat normally, but I still love cooking and baking for friends and family!)
Cleaning it is a breeze. I hand wash with soap & water and a soft dobie-style sponge. For polishing on occasion, I like to use Bar Keeper's Friend liquid formula for all of my stainless items. I have found though if you dry it immediately after washing, it maintains it's shine and stainless luster without even needing to be polished really.
Aside from the overall gorgeous look, the thing I appreciate most with this set is that the *inside* of the mortar and the *bottom* portion of the pestle are brushed stainless... whereas the outsides are polished stainless. In my opinion, this is huge as it helps to hide any potential future scratches from the area that experiences the heaviest use...excellent designing in my opinion. I would highly recommend this item to any one wanting a mini set. If you still can't picture the size accurately... maybe this will help... the box it is *packaged* in (not shipping box, but rather item box) is just shy of 3" W by 3" L by 2 3/8" H and the item fits inside in a snug manner.
It's a bit flimsy. The mortar is hollow. When you push with the pestle, you just cannot get the required grinding force as the mortar gives way. The mortar needs to be one solid piece of stainless steel.
The material is very sturdy, shinny and looks very nice, but the size is so small that I do not have real use for it.However I collect mortar s and pestles so I don't mind. The price is all right and I was pleased to hear that they do deliver to US terrotories.
Perfect size, a 4oz empty apple sauce cup is being used as a lid to keep out dust. The mortar is stainless steel, curved bottom, can be held in one hand. Needed to crush a few pills, did not need anything too large/heavy. The crushed pills come out easily with a very small residue remaining which can be cleaned out with fingers. With stainless steel there is no seasoning process or fear of foreign residue from marble/stone after crushing process. Very pleased with this mortar/pestle, takes little space in cabinet, could probably be placed in a zip lock bag/suitcase for travel which is a plus.
