Product Description
HIC Kitchen’s Fine Porcelain Octagonal Mortar and Pestle Set is the perfect tool to grind items into a fine paste or powder. The mortar bowl and pestle work together to grind and break down ingredients quickly. It’s a helpful addition to kitchen items for speeding up food preparation with minimum effort. Quickly grind fresh ingredients, like cloves of garlic, herbs and spices, peppercorns or cinnamon, nuts, grains, and seeds, into a fine paste or powder. Make aromatic dry rubs, curry pastes, pestos, nut butters, spreads, and so much more. Even use it as a pill crusher to pulverize harder-to-swallow pills! Essential tools for those practicing homeopathy, the art of healing through natural remedies, HIC Kitkchen’s Mortar and Pestle Set offers effortless preparation of herbal and homeopathic remedies. So easy to use. Simply place an item into the mortar bowl. Hold the pestle by the handle and, using a firm pressure, make a circular stirring-like motion to grind your item into a paste or powder. Harder items, like peppercorns, may need the surface cracked before they can be ground. Firmly, but gently, tap the item with the pestle, then grind into the desired consistency. Pestle and mortar are both made from fine-white porcelain to complement kitchen countertops and any home decor. A tradition since 1957, HIC’s fine-white porcelain is durable, heat resistant, and free from lead and cadmium. It’s safe for use in the freezer, microwave, and oven (to 350-degrees Fahrenheit), and dishwasher safe for easy cleanup. Brought to you by HIC, a third-generation family owned and operated company in the USA since 1957.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2014Size: 3.5-Inch, OctagonalVerified PurchaseI bought this to grind up glucosamine pills to add to my dogs food. It works really well. It is beautifully made with the inside portion of the bowl (mortar) and the bottom of the pestle being unglazed for easier grinding. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a mortar and pestle to grind pills or small quantities of dry materials.
I feel compelled to comment on some of the less favorable reviews of this product. This is NOT a mortar and pestle that is suitable for doing large wet jobs. It is a great size for grinding pills and other dry substances to a powder. That is what it is designed to do and it does it well. One reviewer complained about the rough surface holding onto some of the ground powder. It does do that and I GENTLY tap the inside of the bowl with the pestle to knock the powder out of the bottom of the bowl. I wash (by hand) both the mortar and the pestle to get them 100 percent clean.
This is the type of mortar and pestle used in compounding pharmacies and chemistry labs. It is not necessarily the best choice for kitchen jobs. I would advise people looking for a mortar and pestle to consider what they want to be able to do with it, and then to do a bit of research to find one suited to their needs.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2013Size: 3.5-Inch, OctagonalVerified PurchaseIt's actually a bit smaller than 3.5 inches total width; the inside is only 2.75 inches across and less than 2 inches deep, good for kitchens like mine where counter and storage space is at a premium. The pestle is likewise small and light, good for those with small hands but it becomes uncomfortable to maintain your grip if you use it for very long. But the texture is just right, giving enough resistance to do the job, and there's a handy indentation on the rim of the mortar for the pestle to rest in. Overall a good value, and handy for small jobs,
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2013Size: 3.5-Inch, OctagonalVerified PurchaseI have to take calcium every day and the pills are so big and hard for me to swallow. With this Pestle i can now just crush them. I take a mouthful of coffee or some other liquid and just shake the powdered calcium in my mouth, then swallow. I dump the crushed calcium right in my mouth from the pestle. I get the calcium i need every day in a way that works for me. I put my daily dose of calcium and vit. A in the pestle. Then I keep the pestle right on my kitchen cabinet next to my coffee maker where i can see it with the pills inside it. That way i cant forget to take my calcium. This pestle is small and looks kind of cute. I hold it with my palm partially covering the top while i crush my pills. That keeps some of the little pieces from flying out while i crush those huge pills. Always check with your pharmacist or Doctor to be sure its OK to crush any pill. Some pills are not suppose to be crushed for a varity of reasons so always check first. Thank-you Amazon for not making me have to drive all over the place looking for something exactly right for what i need.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2024Size: 3.5-Inch, OctagonalVerified PurchaseI bought this to crush eggs shells and make a homemade calcium powder for my pet birds to add to their chop. It was slow to arrive but likely due to shipping being free and the cost. I didn't expect it to arrive very quickly at the price I paid.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2012Size: 3.5-Inch, OctagonalVerified PurchaseI bought this product to make a small batch of pesto. I was told when you grind basil the flavor is much better.
I almost killed myself making it. You probably should only buy this product if you are looking for crushing some small grains, herbs, pills, etc.
PROS:
Non Porous Material (did slightly stain from basil leaves)
Mortar and Pestle have ruff surfaces for grinding
Simple Classic Look
CONS:
Pestle is small and hard to hold for a long period of time
Fragile (it dropped about one foot from my hands to the Formica counter and it shattered)
Bowl is VERY small
Basically for basic needs like herb and pill crushing, this should be fine. If you are looking to use it for long periods of time or crush large quantities of materials - look elsewhere.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2020Size: 3.5-Inch, OctagonalVerified PurchaseForgive the crappy background and other orders in the sides of the images....
This is a little smaller than expected but thats my fault bc i dont usually think in mm measurements and didnt have a clear mental image before ordering lol.
The bottom of the mortar is unfinished, as is the bottom of the pestle. This is good for my purposes but if you're looking for something to get finer texture product then go elsewhere.
I loooove that there is a little dip in the one corner...its sublte unlike those with the more exaggerated lip for pouring, and the whole thing is comfortable to hold firmly while using.
Definitely would buy again and recommend to anyone who wants to grind herbs like clove or who cant swallow pills and must make powders.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2018Size: 3.5-Inch, OctagonalVerified PurchaseI bought this looking for something to crush my cat's antacid pill when he throws up and his stomach is upset. I had one like this back years ago but lost it in a move, so had to return to the drawing board to compare models. Turns out there are a ton of options to consider when looking for a mortar and pestle - size and surface, material, washability, etc. For tiny cat pills, occasionally, this was the best option for the budget. It is small and can sit unobtrusively on the countertop until I need it. It washes up quickly, and while some people complain that this will ultimately perhaps grind in some ceramic components, I doubt it will do that enough to be a health hazard. And in the meantime, I can use it to crush the occasional dried herb for cooking. Spent way too long looking at options to come back to this same model which was just fine to begin with, if I hadn't lost the original. Figures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased...
Size: 3.5-Inch, OctagonalVerified PurchaseWhen I ordered this item, I was a bit afraid that porcelain wouldn't be as good as ceramic or granite. After using it a few times, I was happy to see it worked out just fine. As an aspiring herbalist, eventually I'll need a bigger one, but for now, I love that I can put 1/4-1/2 of an herb and grind them easily for teas and tinctures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great, on the smaller size
Size: 3.5-Inch, OctagonalVerified PurchaseI use this to break up my rosin for aerial silks. Works great. I would say it was a bit smaller then I expected but that being said the ad most likely says size and I didn't pay much attention. Size doesn't really matter to me this product works as I needed it to
