I bought this model because I really liked the one I had before that got lost in a move. That one was almost 10 years old and going strong. Sure do miss it. This one broke in half (and fell into the food.)

I wish it were made out of more substantial materials ... but ... with that said, it is cleverly engineered WELL-DESIGNED, aesthetically quite pleasing, has a small footprint and definitely does the trick. The peppercorns it came with are VERY FRESH! Will it last forever? Probably not. Is it going to work out for 5 - 10 years? Probably. It is so well-designed that - since it's not made of the strongest materials - I would suggest buying two of them - one for now, one for later when number one ceases to function and you get bummed out when it's not on the market. It's neat.

    I purchased a grinder similar to this one 7 years ago at Target for $8 and used the HECK out of it DAILY for those 7 years. It finally broke, and this Chef'n Bistro Combo Grinder was the closest thing I could find as a replacement. It's okay, but is inferior to the Target one I loved so much -- at twice the cost, of course! (Isn't that the way of the world these days?)

    Anyway. The pepper seems to grind a little too slowly and finely for my taste (despite adjusting to make the grind more coarse) but what I REALLY dislike is that the salt holes are about three times larger than normal, meaning that salt gets POURED onto your food, not sprinkled. Oy vey!

    We had a similar shaker/grinder before buying this one, but it had a plastic "file" to grind the pepper. This one is a steel file, and is much more easily adjusted to grind the pepper to your preference - from course to fine grain - just by turning the base. It is easier to fill and very attractive to have around and is much more stable - the base is bigger than the top, so it doesn't tip over easily. Last but not least the salt spout is cool. You can use it as a salt shaker or pour salt into a measuring spoon by opening the spout. We love it!

    I had this on my wishlist and for xmas a few years back my parents went and bought a different set of salt and pepper grinders for us. My father said he'd seen this one in a store and it seemed to feel cheap. I disagreed based on the good ratings. We kept the nice ones they gave us to keep on the table and I bought this one and couldn't be more pleased. I've had it for over 15 months now and it get used frequently.

    It seems a little gimmicky to combine them in this way but it really is extremely useful. So easy to apply both salt and pepper at the same time with just a turn of the wrist and a squeeze of the hand. I love being able to hold a chicken breast or pork chop in one hand and salt and pepper one side, then flip and repeat, whereas with a traditional pepper grinder you need two hands. I also often find myself adding s&p to something in a container or skillet while tossing the food around in the container/skillet with the free hand.

    Can't say enough about this grinder!

    Update 6/2014 - it finally bit the dust after 2.5 years; the bottom half broke off the top half (where the pepper end screws into the salt end). I'm going to move it from 5 stars to 4 stars as I feel the quality could be improved a bit. But I'm also going to purchase another one because it worked very well and there's not much else like it. I get compliments on it whenever guests see me using it. And I've never had any issues with the pepper grinder or with too much salt flow, as I've seen from some reviews.

The last batch we bought are so shoddy and flimsy they break if you look at them wrong, let alone surviving the bumps of standard use.

    While I would love to the original, sturdy design of this product -- it is very handy to have the salt and pepper attached -- I can't justify spending money one something I know will break in a few months, or a few days.

    Sometimes I don't have enough hands when cooking, so it makes me crazy to stop and wash hands just to use the pepper grinder when seasoning food. I had a similar product previously, but foolishly gave it away to help out a budding chef. I have spent years trying to find a 'all in one' that will grind fresh pepper. Now I am sooo happy ! It is larger than the last one - holds a lot - but is well balanced and light weight given size & weight of content. It has a soft rubber bottom ring that helps stabilize when setting down. The course ground selector is nicely sensitive - good range of sizes and the grinder mechanism works great. For my personal tastes, the salt holes are too generous, so I simply covered one side with a piece of cellophane tape. And, not to belabor the obvious, the clear container lets me know if it needs refilling - been a problem in the past with other pretty designer sets - "Is salt coming out ?". I haven't needed to refill it yet, but from reading the instructions, the two halves separate, making that process ever so much easier than I've experienced in the past - don't have to cover the salt holes when turning upside down to refill the pepper end. I think the style is elegant enough to go from stove to the table and is easily wiped cleaned to maintain the exterior. And what a great price for this combo grinder ! If your looking for cooking short cuts, try this. You'll just love the concept and using this Chef'n Bistro Combo Grinder !!
