- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2025So many of my favorite Shabbos and holiday recipes are in this one. I love the Hungarian dishes and desserts especially, reminds me of home. The recipes are easy to follow. Try the homemade ice cream and parve desserts. Love the challah, cholent, kishke, tzimmes, minestrone soup, matzo balls, and the vegetarian Hungarian goulash. It’s simply great.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2016Absolutely phenomenal cookbook! It may not have photos, but it packs a punch everywhere else that more than makes up for it. This book is thick like an encyclopedia, and everything in it is wonderful! This is a true go-to from the simple to the extraordinary. I am an excellent cook, but this book has been an invaluable resource, and that coming from a non Jew. I make the granola recipe every couple of weeks, and I go to this book weekly. The gourmet sweet potatoes have helped me, an already very adventurous cook, to shake things up a bit.
This book is a true wealth of information. There is an index and there are introductions to recipes that have both helped me unpack terms like kugel and tzimmes, with which I was only somewhat familiar. There are helpful diagrams for more complicated recipes requiring specific techniques, such as cabbage rolls and hamantaschen. The hamantaschen filling looks like one of the best traditional recipes I've seen, and everyone online uses this diagram for hamentaschen assembly as a reference to accompany their recipes.
This is a real heritage cookbook in the sense that any American, Jewish or not, can utilize this book to pass down recipes from one generation to the next. I enjoyed the explanations for Jewish holidays as well. I learned a great deal about Jewish culture in terms of important celebrations and the foods that are enjoyed at these special times. If you know anyone in your life who either a. loves to cook and try new recipes; b. can't cook for crap and is married; getting married, or moving on their own; or c. can cook a bit, but wants to improve, then this is the book for them. You really cannot lose with this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2012I am an excellent cook but new to Jewish culture, dietary law and cooking. I love this book! I have used it every week, especially in preparing my Sabbath meals, since I purchased it. I also purchased the book, "The Kosher Kitchen," and with these two books I feel I am well prepared to prepare and serve foods in the proper and prescribed manner.
This is a wonderful cookbook and has tons of recipes for every occasion! I understand that it is a classic, and I would have to agree. Since I have been cooking for so many decades, I usually don't try new recipes or even purchase new books unless they have photos, but I made an exception in this case. I'm not sorry; the directions are simple enough and the books is set up with so many suggestions, that photos are unnecessary.
I really like the explanations for special Jewish meals and observations, and the traditional meals served. There are lots of suggestions like that that make this cookbook unique and classic. It is a large book, packed with more than just recipes, but information and ideas. I will definitely keep this as part of my library.
I highly recommend its purchase for anyone who wants to learn how to cook and serve great Jewish meals, the kosher Jewish way.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2013I received this as a wedding gift, and it's the best cookbook. Instead of a book that's filled with a ton of fancy recipes that no one has time to make, this one has that and it has all the basics- kugel recipes, basic challah, chicken soup, baked chicken, chocolate cakes, etc. There is a picture code to let you know which recipes are quick and easy and which take more skill. I use recipes from this book almost every week when cooking for shabbos, and sometimes when I want to try something new, too.
It also has sections explaining laws pertaining to kosher food and keeping a kosher kitchen, as well as helpful hints for each section, such as which types of meat to buy for different kinds of recipes, and how to make a perfect pie crust. I consider this a must for every new kosher cook, and I've bought it for friends as a wedding gift.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2023This has become my family‘s favorite cookbook. There’s a recipe for just about everything you could imagine.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2016Got to admit, this seems to be a very, very good collection of kosher recipes, ranging from traditional to modern. Probably my 15th kosher cookbook, yet I consult it frequently. E.g. A simple cauliflower kugel. Or, when trying to adapt Moosewood's "Mushroom Moussaka (eggplant)" to be pareve, found a pareve Moussaka recipe here and between the two came up with a hit. Just wish there were a large section devoted to a good solid discusison of cholents, since the more observant Orthodox (or Haredi) are so deeply restricted that warming plates or blechs are almost useless (many Orthodox Rabbis won't even let me put something on a blech once Shabbat begins ... What's the point of having one?!?!) So we need lots if recipes for Shabbat afternoon.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2013This cookbook has excellent, varied recipes, is organized logically, has a supremely easy index to look up general headings as well as specific recipes. The recipes are excellent; I have never had one fail, and i've been using this for many, many years! That's why I bought it as a gift for the bride; what better way to a man's heart than through his stomach!! :D Seriously, this is one of the best cookbooks around, plus it has wonderful information and menus for the holidays. Buy it; you'll love it! :D
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2014At first I was a little take aback at the numerous halachic instructions, but the receipes are easy to make, tasty and worth trying. The Kosher food substitutes like non-dairy whipped topping are easy enough to ignore if chemicals in your food are an issue, I made non Kosher versions of the receipes and they still tasted like Jewish food, and they were very tasty!
This book is a keeper.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook but...
The media could not be loaded.
The cover was put on upside down. When i turn it so i can read, the pages are assembled to be read from right to left (and i always thought books written in English were to be read from left to right, looks like someone lied to me all my life...), some pages are not attached properly or are loose. And yes i bought it new, not second hand. Otherwise it is a great cookbook.
