Its not too big nor too small. If anyone has used many mortal and pestles, they know a really big basin can actually be a detriment, because then you have to spend all day chasing things around the bowl to crush them. This one is a really nice functional size, whether it be used for cooking or other herbal tasks.
Now that I'm past the mundane part of the review, I must say its absolutely beautiful. I love the earthy color and the swirls. Sure, you might be able to get a plain white one a bit cheaper but this thing is so heavy, dense and well made it will last a lifetime and is a rather unique piece. I have mine displayed prominently. Its too pretty to hide away in a cabinet.

Can't speak for others, but ours is NOT food safe!
I feel like I've been taken. There is nothing in the image to relate to size, so when looking at the dimensions, I assumed that the 3" was the working diameter; instead, it was the overall diameter (photo #1). In other words, if they had made the walls 3" thick, they could advertise this as a 9" mortar & pestle.Next, ours is not as pictured. Notice the rim of the unit on Amazon, then notice the rim in my photos below (photos #2 & #3). Ours is single rim while the one pictured is dual rim.However, the MAIN problem I have with this mortar & pestle is, it is effectively defective! There is one spot on the rim where my wife is afraid if she taps it just right, a large chip will fall out (photos #2 & #3). But "my" main gripe is with the inside of the bowl. Please look at the last three photos. Two photos, light is shining through the sidewall, the other photo has the light from above. In these photos, you can clearly see defects in the rock. Why is this bad? Well, imagine we wanted to use this for food purposes. How easily could food get stuck in those small cavities and become rancid? ...Is it even possible to fully clean this thing?No thanks, we'll pass! Sending this back for refund!!One final thought - As I was looking at the inside of the pestle one last time, it dawned on me that the shape of the lower part of the bowl did not match the shape of the rounded end of the mortar. That additionally means that any material that gets in that small portion of the bowl cannot be crushed as needed. Just seems like more thought and care would go into these units, as many are used in food preparation and for crushing medications.

I love this mortar and pestle set, for all of the people complaining that it's not green in color, do your research, it's not supposed to be green in color, green onyx is supposed to be brown with red and white, it's has beautiful colors, very well made and sturdy, works perfectly for what I use it for.
